Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

Cornell University operates its Animal Care and Use program under the Animal Welfare Assurance A3347-01 on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). This assurance applies to all the associated campuses, except Weill Medical College. Cornell University gives assurance that it will comply with the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. As part of that assurance, institutions using vertebrate animals in research have an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to review all animal proposals and procedures. The IACUC functions as the self-regulating body for animal research and teaching on behalf of Cornell University.

Cornell University policy requires that all teaching and research activities involving the use of vertebrate animals is reviewed and approved by the IACUC before any animals can be procured and work can begin. In addition to providing oversight over the animal care and use program in a variety of ways (Animal Care and Use Policy 1.4), the IACUC also serves as a resource to faculty, investigators, technicians, students, staff, and administrators, providing guidance in fulfilling the obligation to plan and conduct all animal use procedures with the highest scientific, humane and ethical principles.
